StoryaWrite is a Mac app that runs on your machine. The marketing site you are reading is a static page that serves a download. This document spells out what each side of that does and does not do with your data.
The app
The StoryaWrite Mac app stores your novel in a SQLite file inside your Documents folder. We never have a copy of that file. The file is yours; copy it, back it up, version-control it, open it in any SQLite browser. We are not in the loop.
The app makes no outbound network call without your explicit, named opt-in. That includes:
- Spell-check. Uses the macOS system spell-checker, which runs entirely on your Mac. No internet involved.
- Grammar. Off by default. If you turn it on, the app will tell you which third-party service it would send text to (currently LanguageTool) and ask you to confirm. You can turn it off again at any time. With grammar off, no manuscript text leaves your machine.
- Updates. The app does not phone home to check for updates. New versions are announced through the optional email list on the homepage. You install the new version manually by downloading a fresh DMG.
- Crash reports. The app does not send crash reports automatically. If something breaks, email me — see below.
There is no account, no licence server, no telemetry, no analytics. The first time you launch the app, no network connection is made. You can verify this with Little Snitch, Lulu, or any outbound-connection monitor.
The marketing site
The page at write.storya.app uses Plausible Analytics. Plausible is a cookieless, GDPR-compliant analytics service that does not collect personal data, does not track you across sites, and does not build a profile of you. It records a daily count of page loads and download clicks. That is it.
If you submit your email address to the optional waitlist field, that address is sent to Resend (the email service that backs the wider Storya stack) and stored in an audience named storyawrite-early-access. The address is used to email you when a new version of StoryaWrite ships. It is not used for anything else, not shared with third parties, and not added to a marketing newsletter. You can ask to be removed at any time by emailing me; one reply, one delete.
The .dmg download
The StoryaWrite .dmg is hosted on Cloudflare R2 at dl.storya.app. Cloudflare records standard server-access logs (timestamp, source IP, user agent, file requested) for the purpose of operating the service. Those logs are not joined with any other data we hold and are not used to track you.
Children
StoryaWrite is for adults working on long-form fiction. The site does not knowingly collect any data from anyone under 16.
Changes
If this policy changes, the dateline at the top will be updated. Substantive changes (anything that affects what data we collect or how it is used) will be announced to anyone on the optional waitlist before the change takes effect.
